We are the only NGO to provide long term care for destitute people suffering from CML (Chronic Myelogenous Leukaemia). If we are able to treat a patient suffering from CML using Imatinib, they are able to live a normal life. If are not able to do so, the consequences can be fatal. A patient on Imatinib requires daily doses for his/her lifetime at a cost of about $US200 (€133) per month.
We currently have 6 patients using Imatinib. Three more will require it in the near future. In addition we have six patients on our waiting list. Without Imatinib these patients face a very bleak future.
As an NGO caring for the medical needs of the poorest of the poor in Kolkata, we are forced to make very difficult decisions about who receives major treatment and who does not. We usually are forced to favour treatments with a public health aspect since that has a multiplier effect on the population. This is not what we would prefer; it is simply the fact that we have limited financial resources.
We are seeking generous individuals who can sponsor one patient, or partially sponsor one patient. This is a long term commitment as patients on Imatinib can life a normal life span.
