2009 Diwali Event

Calcutta Rescue was the beneficiary of a superb Diwali event last  October hosted by the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM).  Star of the show was actress and author Meera Syal, most famous for her roles in hit TV shows Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at No 45, who gave a fascinating interview about her life and work.

It was the first time the prestigious organisation, which draws members from all fields of medicine, had held such an event specifically for its UK Indian members.  With brass tables gleaming with tea lights, dancers and a mesmerising storyteller recounting the Diwali story, the RSM’s magnificent Wimpole Street HQ was transformed for the night into an Indian palace.

The UK support group was absolutely delighted the RSM chose to use the event to highlight the work of CR, with volunteer Jenny Smallman giving a talk about the charity’s work at the start of the

evening.  Many doctors and surgeons came to our stall afterwards to discuss how they might be able to contribute to improving the care

of the charity’s patients in Kolkata. And Meera was happy to pose for pictures to promote CR and its handicrafts.

CR is deeply grateful to the RSM for the generous support it has given the charity since last year, which includes providing expert advice on a range of subjects as well as allowing us to us use

its superb facilities free of charge for meetings.
