Dear Support Group Members,
Please see the newly drawn up list of medicines and dressings which would be very useful as donated medication for Calcutta Rescue’s clinics and project activities. It has been developed in conjunction with the doctors and the pharmacy. It concentrates on drugs that our doctors sometimes prescribe, or maybe difficult or expensive to obtain in India.
The most useful donations are marked. The list does not include controlled drugs such as ketamine or fentanyl, as these potentially can cause problems with customs and India’s drug control agencies. The list also does not contain injectable cytotoxic drugs due to the potential safety problems with transporting them.
Please ensure that any medication that is donated has not expired or is close to its expiry date.
No medication should be shipped. All should be brought out by volunteers or visitors with a letter from the donors/CR Support Group stating that the drugs are a free donation for free distribution to needy patients including the contact details of the donor.
The list of anti-retroviral drugs is confined to those currently available in India, to ensure continuity of treatment after donations are exhausted.
The combined anti-retroviral medication can be supplied singly, as well as in combinations because combinations are used other than those which are in the list. Many of these drugs in donor countries are supplied separately.
At the present time the National AIDS Control Organisation cannot supply the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine with efavirenz, lamivudine and stavudine and patients are referred to Dr Jack for a free supply of these drugs.
