A message from Dr Jack Preger
Calcutta Rescue Fund now is to be blessed with its own website, thanks to all who have made this possible - a special mention here to Susanna and Les. It will help CRF get its message across so much more easily to new and existing supporters. Our hard-copy Newsletter will still have its place: our Editor Sean knows well that the printed word still survive, notwithstanding the proliferation of cyber cafes. The website will enable us to reach supporters hitherto untapped; and to inform all of the most recent developments in Calcutta Rescue.
CR has expanded in recent years into arsenic filtration, multi-drug resistant TB treatment and HIV/AIDS. We are the only suppliers of free treatment in West Bengal for this form of TB and for resistant cases of HIV/AIDS requiring second-line anti-retroviral drugs. Our diabetic programme continues to expand in the face of an explosion of newly-diagnosed cases. We hope to expand our educational projects in the face of enormous needs, urban and rural. And to continue to work with the Government in various initiatives - health, including family planning; and education.
Where does all this fit into the 'India Booming' image? The 'Boom' resounds loud and clear only in the upper reaches of society; and, at the level of our work, social needs are not met adequately. Government funding is insufficient and private donations cannot fill the gap, faced with a population exceeding 1 billion.
I appeal for your help to maintain the work of CR, now in its 27th year.
Thank you, Jack Preger.
