lWelcome to the summer edition of our newsletter which is packed
with the latest information about the charity’s work in Kolkata,
plus a number of exciting new initiatives elsewhere.
First and foremost of these is the launch of the UK support
group’s own website – www.calcuttarescue.org.uk. This has been
under construction for many months and has just gone live. From
now on anyone can instantly access a wide variety of information
about the UK support group and the projects in Kolkata on this
site.
Whether you want to learn more about the projects, check out
opportunities for volunteers or make a donation, this website has it
all.
And to celebrate the launch there is a chance to win a signed copy
of The Calcutta Kitchen, a recipe book full of delicious recipes and
exquisite photographs of the city.
To take part, and to find out more about the website, turn to the
back page.
For everyone interested in Calcutta Rescue’s inspirational
founder, Dr Jack Preger MBE, there is a fascinating new online
book about him based on a series of interviews carried out by Basil
McCall. The e-book gives fresh insight into Dr Jack’s life and moti-
vation and includes his sometimes amusing, and occasionally irrev-
erent views, on a wide range of subjects. See page 3 for more.
We also carry a special feature on the mother and child health
clinic written by Susan Lee, who is a member of the UK support
group and a midwife with deep knowledge of this project gained
over many years of volunteering. Following the case of one child,
baby Mollha, we see how the clinic’s mixture of expertise, practical
support and health education saves the lives of so many desperate-
ly needy children. Turn to page 5.
There are also updates on the charity’s HIV and Aids work, the
street medicines programme, the work being done to protect people
from arsenic poisoning and an innovative play about health and
hygiene written and perfomed by CRstaff to coincide with world
TB day.
As usual we only have space for a small sample of the work that
CR, with your help, has carried out over the past six months.
Thank you so much for your support which makes all this possible.
