Standing orders – a big help
Thanks to you, our supporters, we have sent
more than six milion rupees (£75,000) to
Kolkata this year to fund Calcutta Rescue’s
medical, educational and vocational projects.
We desperately want to be able to match this
level of funding next year and on into the
future, so that all of the life-saving and life-
changing work can continue.
However, the total from one-off donations
and other sources of funding in the UK has
fallen markedly in recent years.
We are trying to address this through initia-
tives such as our new CR Gift Cards and set-
ting up a dedicated website.
But the best way for a small charity like ours
to secure the future for all of our thousands of
poor and destitute patients in Kolkata is for
supporters to set up a standing order for regu-
lar donations.
Some of you do this already and you are the
backbone of the charity.
Large or small, a regular monthly or annual
donation means we know we can count on
you.
If everyone who receives this newsletter set
up a standing order for just £3 a month, we
would be well on our way to meeting the six-
million rupee challenge.
But the more you can afford to give, the more
we can achieve.
If you are able to commit to regular giving,
there’s a form in the middle of this newsletter.
Many thanks!
Why Ganesha offers bags more to its customers
THANK YOU to everyone who supports the work of Calcutta Rescue.
Without your help none of this could happen.
Almost everyone who visits the
Ganesha shop in Gabriel’s
Wharf, next to the Oxo Tower
on London super-trendy South
Bank, walks away with a little
bit of Calcutta Rescue.
For 13 years Jo Lawbuary and
Purnendu Roy have been pro-
moting Fairtrade products,
including handicrafts made by
Calcutta Rescue’s handicraft
projects.
Their company has an office in
Kolkata so it’s easy to buy and
send to London.
Jo says they’ve been selling CR
key rings and cards for five
years.
“Now we think it’s time to look
at more CR products, especially
with the quality being so high
and there’s such a good range.”
And whatever you buy from
Ganesha, you’ll carry it away in
a CR-made paper carrier bag.
“They’ve become sought after,
collectable even,” says Jo. “We
could sell them but we don’t.
They’re special and the only way
to get your hands on one is to buy
something!”
The bags are the ultimate in
recycling, made from local
Calcutta newspapers, lined with
brown paper with cord handles
secured by metal eyelets.
“They’re very strong and, with
our bright pink name, they’re
just what we need for a walking
advertisement.”
In fact, they’re so good that
Ganesha is rebranding and using
the carrier bags as a basis for
their new look.
Ganesha is a member of the
British Association of Fairtrade
Shops.
And the name? The elephant-
headed god Ganesha is one of
the best-known Hindu deities,
the god of success and destroyer
of evil and obstacles.
You don’t have to visit London
to shop at Ganesha – just go to
their website www.ganesha.co.uk
and shop online.
